Fernando pockets career’s first gold in seniors’ 50 to 55 age category.

Prominent badminton coach, Darshan Fernando, struck gold in a recently concluded championship at Miami, Florida, to win the US Seniors title for Canada.

Fernando outclassed top seed André Lafortune of Quebec in a hard-fought final in the US Senior International Badminton Championships 2012.

The final score was 21-9 and 21-17.

First in class

The master shuttler from Brampton has won several tournaments, but it was his career’s first gold in seniors’ 50 to 55 age category.

“I am excited to win my first seniors title,” Fernando told Focus.

“I trained for more than six months for this event and on top of that had an injury too in the Achilles Tendon. But I never gave up my courage and determination to play and take part.”

In the first match, Fernando beat former champion from Holland, Franciscus Scholl, 21-10 and 21-6; Watkins Fessal 21-13 and 21-5 in the second encounter; and Vinod Soni of Costa Rica 21-11 and 21-8 in the semi-finals.
