Symposium to educate community on diabetes, heart health
Wednesday November 4 2009

A symposium geared toward educating the South Asian community on diabetes and heart health will take place on Sunday, Nov 8, 10am-4pm, at the Pearson Convention Centre.

South Asians are the largest and fastest growing ethnic minority population in Canada. Unfortunately, diabetes has become a major health issue within the South Asian community and South Asians have a significantly higher rate of type 2 diabetes and tend to develop the disease much earlier (an average of 10 years earlier) than the general population.

South Asians also have a significantly higher rate of cardiovascular disease, and diabetes is a major contributing factor.

The purpose of this symposium is to raise awareness of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and the event will feature presentations, an "Ask the Experts" panel discussion, an interactive fitness demonstration and trade show with a number of exhibitors offering health care products and services for the South Asian community.

It is presented by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario and the Canadian Diabetes Association.

"Attendees to the symposium will learn how they can prevent and manage diabetes while improving their overall health," said Siva Swaminathan, chair, South Asian Diabetes Chapter, Canadian Diabetes Association, and chef and instructor, Chezsiva Cooking School.

The day will also include inspirational stories including one from a South Asian family man who recovered from triple bypass surgery at 39 years of age.

Admission and parking is free to the general public and pre-registration is not required. For details visit diabetes.ca/south-asian-expo or call 1-800-BANTING (226-8464).
