'Respect your elders'
Wednesday November 18 2009
By SUNIL RAO

All cultures teach respect for their elders, with people from South Asia elevating this sentiment to a religion in its own right - a fond duty and privilege to be performed by grown children for their parents.

But in today's modern, advanced era of senior homes and elder neglect, and worse, does anyone really still bother with such quaint notions as honouring one's parents?

Mississauga Ram Mandir, for one, does.

"We're holding a function Sunday, Nov 29, to honour all seniors - all, from all backgrounds and cultures," Pundit Roopnauth Sharma, president, Hindu Federation, and spiritual head of the temple, told Focus.

He pointed out Hinduism has always stressed respect for our elders. "This function is one way of showing our appreciation and respect for all they've done for us," he said.

The event, in which several area temples are participating, will see an estimated "300 of our seniors being dined and entertained at a sit-down delicious, vegetarian dinner", he said.

Among the participating temples is the Hindu Sabha Mandir, Brampton's oldest and the biggest in the area.

Ram Mandir is located at 270 Export Blvd. On the day, proceedings are scheduled to commence at 3pm and run through to 7pm.
