Supported by the federal Department of Justice with a one-time funding of $81,000, Brampton Neighbourhood Resource Centre (BNRC) took the initiative of hosting the Youth Justice Conference Mar 19-20.

Some 120 students - some of them at risk or with guns, gangs or violence background - will be provided the opportunity to share their ideas and learn about smart choices to support effective youth justice system.

"Our objective is to optimize opportunities for youth and provide them a comprehensive support network across the Region of Peel," said Len Carby, Chairman of BNRC Board of Directors, at a press conference in Brampton last week.

BNRC made this announcement within few weeks of laying off some 49 employees (effective Mar 31) due to suspension of government funding.

Anthony Hutchinson, CEO of BNRC, said some 30 agencies from Peel Region have also been invited to help guide the youth.

He said some youngsters familiar with gang culture will also speak to the participants to assist them in coping with violence related issues.

Dr Eshri Singh, conference partner and President of Holiday Inn Brampton, said he is delighted BNRC has been awarded funding and welcomed the conference at his hotel.
