Vancouver beauty wins Miss India Canada 2016 crown

South Asian Focus

Glitz, glamour, beauty lit up another year at the 26th annual Miss India Canada event.  This star studded evening was an incredible night of entertainment, fashion, and surprises.

With a packed house, many members within the community including past winners, were in attendance. The show opened with a warm welcome and several giveaways for the audience provided by the presenting sponsor, Taj Mahal and the associate sponsor, Air Canada.

The show was officially kicked off by the resident emcees Karen Johnson and Francis D'Souza who welcomed Miss India Canada 2015, Manasvi Noel, back to the stage for her final walk as the reigning winner.

The show went on to showcase the talents of the final 15 delegates who took the stage by storm with their opening dance. The evening wear round followed which had the delegates posing in designer wear by prominent South Asian fashion boutiques in the country.

The talent portion of the night absolutely entertained, keeping the audience on their feet, cheering for their favourite as each delegate performed a range of talents from traditional Indian and Bollywood dance, singing, free speech, portrait paintings to even martial arts.  This year's delegates spoke about some of their initiatives that included mental health awareness, promoting women in sports, and breaking barriers in education; each hoping to become a successful role model for young girls today.

A whirlwind of a night quickly settled when the final five were announced - Mandy Kaur, Tulika Gupta, Shameela Shaheed, Tanpreet Parmar and Sharen Sandhu. The question and answer period followed the announcement of the top five finalists, giving the delegates their final opportunity to win over the judges.

But before the winner was announced, the audience was once again brought to their feet by the show’s guest of honour and musical sensation Dr. Zeus who also brought out to the stage Punjabi music artist Zora.  The crowd cheered and danced as Dr. Zeus performed some of his fan favourite songs.

In the end there could only be one and it was Tanpreet Parmar from Vancouver, BC, who was asked "What has being a part of the Miss India Canada event taught you about yourself?" Parmar described her experience as a phenomenal one participating in the event for the second time this year.  She said that the reason she came back for a second year was because she "gained confidence, self-love and acceptance within myself and regardless of winning or losing I believe in perseverance and chasing your dreams and I am here right now to chase my dream and that is to me Miss India Canada 2016."

Other winners of the night included second runner up, Tulika Gupta from Edmonton, AB, and first runner up and Miss Congeniality, Mandy Kaur, from Toronto, ON. Miss Photogenic and Best Talent went to Sharen Sandhu from Winnipeg, MB; and the Air Canada's People's Choice Award, was given to Ria Tharakan, of Mississauga, ON.
