Gators lift cricket cup

Father Michael Goetz Secondary School thrashed Rick Hansen Secondary School by 22 runs to lift the ROPSSAA Senior Girls Cricket Championship 2008 trophy in Mississauga last week.
“We played well and we have done better. I’m so happy over today’s victory. I think we won because of our fielding,” Gators’ skipper Sana Advani told South Asian Focus after the match.
Skipper of Rick Hansen Khateja Kadir won the toss and put Gators in to bat first in the six-over a side match.
Home ground advantage enabled the Gators to pile up a respectable total of 50 for five. Whitney D’Cunha scored an unbeaten 15 runs. Mehreen captured two wickets for Rick Hansen, while Nimra, Alveera and Khateja grabbed a wicket apiece.
Chasing 51 to win, Rick Hansen managed only 28 for three in the allotted six overs, Nimra Iqbal remaining unbeaten with eight. Whitney D’Cunha snared two wickets for four runs in two overs.
“Both teams were exemplary in terms of sportsmanship,” said Kathy Knafelc, convener for the Region of Peel Secondary Schools Athletics Association.
