The need to tell stories that transcend regional, national and international boundaries is why she became a producer as well, revealed Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra.
Chopra’s production house Purple Pebble Pictures has thrown its support behind an upcoming Punjabi film, Sarvann. It was that responsibility that brought the Quantico star to Hilton Mississauga Meadowvale, Sunday, Nov. 20.
Chopra was not only promoting Sarvann, coming this December, she released the trailer as well. International Film Festival of South Asia hosted the event.
Amrinder Gill and Simi Chahal, who star in the film, shared the stage alongside co-producer Deepshika Deshmukh. Also present were Chopra’s mother Dr. Madhu Chopra and brother Siddharth Chopra.
“To me, art and stories cannot be defined by boundaries,” Chopra told the media. “People have asked me, ‘why a Punjabi film and not a Hindi one?’ I think regional cinema doesn’t get as much support as Hindi films, and I believe ultimately cinema brings us all closer….”
In 2012, Chopra, dropped her single In My City with rapper will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas. The international icon will also be making her foray into Hollywood films with Zac Efron and Dwyane Johnson in Baywatch, coming May 2017.
Wearing a dark green embroidered top paired with a cream-coloured ethnic pant, Chopra, a resident of New York, said her transition into Hollywood was smooth, as the language of cinema is universal.
“Having worked with so many producers from across the globe, I have new found respect for them,” she said. “As a producer myself, I am learning the business side of producing, and having the support of my Mom and brother Sidharth helps. I strive for excellence in everything I do.”
Sarvann is a coming-of-age story of a young Canadian (Gill) who returns to India to connect with his roots and he finds himself through his journey.
“Living in New York, Priyanka takes care of each and every detail of the business remotely,” Madhu Chopra said. “I am just helping her. We’re all proud of this film because it’s a story that’s filled with family values and lessons. It’s about finding your soul through retribution. I hope people will watch it with their families.”
